The Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court has directed the registration of an FIR against Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi over allegations that he holds British citizenship in addition to his Indian nationality. The order was passed on a petition filed by Karnataka-based BJP worker S. Vignesh Shishir, who claimed Gandhi declared himself a British national while serving as a director of a UK-registered company, Backops Ltd., incorporated in 2003. The petitioner submitted documents, including company records and purported British government emails, arguing that this makes Gandhi ineligible to contest elections or hold a Lok Sabha seat, as Indian law does not permit dual citizenship. Justice Subhash Vidyarthi observed that the allegations warrant investigation and set aside an earlier rejection of the plea by a lower court in Lucknow. The bench directed the Uttar Pradesh government to register the FIR at Kotwali police station in Rae Bareli, from where Gandhi is elected as MP, and gave liberty to refer the probe to a central agency like the CBI if needed. The matter has revived a long-standing controversy, with similar claims having surfaced in the past but dismissed by higher courts on earlier occasions. Congress has not yet issued a detailed response to the development, while the petitioner described the court order as a landmark judgment. The case could have implications for Gandhi's parliamentary membership if the allegations are substantiated during the investigation.
