US Secretary of State Marco Rubio sparked controversy during his India visit after comments that many felt insulted Americans while responding to questions about racist remarks against Indians. Speaking at a joint press conference in New Delhi with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Rubio addressed concerns about anti-Indian comments in the US, especially after recent criticism of India linked to H-1B visas. Rubio said that every country has “stupid people” who post dumb comments online, adding that such people also exist in the United States. His remarks quickly triggered backlash in the US, with critics accusing him of insulting Americans during an overseas visit. President Donald Trump also faced criticism for comments many considered racist or disrespectful towards India, adding pressure to Rubio’s trip, which was focused on trade, defence, and Quad cooperation. Indian social media users also pointed out that since Rubio described people making racist remarks against Indians as “stupid,” it indirectly meant that Trump himself was being called “stupid” for his alleged remarks against India. After the incident, many Americans expressed anger on social media, with some even threatening not to support Trump and Rubio in future elections. Many users called the remarks tone-deaf and disrespectful to American citizens. Later, Rubio clarified his statement and highlighted the strong US-India relationship and Trump’s admiration for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. @thetrid.ent
