Former Army Chief General M. M. Naravane has asserted that India did not lose even an inch of territory to China during the 2020 Ladakh standoff. Speaking amid ongoing political debate, he firmly rejected claims of territorial concessions and emphasised that Indian forces maintained their positions along the Line of Actual Control. Naravane stated that the Modi government gave the Army complete operational freedom to respond to the situation on the ground. He described the directive to act as deemed appropriate as a reflection of the leadership’s full confidence in the armed forces, rather than any form of abandonment. The former Army Chief criticised attempts to drag the military into political controversy, particularly remarks by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. He suggested that using the Army’s actions or his unpublished memoir to question national resolve amounted to insulting the institution and its personnel. Naravane urged keeping the armed forces insulated from partisan narratives, reiterating that India held the upper hand in managing the border tensions without ceding any land. @thetrid.ent
