The United States has returned 657 ancient Indian antiquities, including valuable bronze idols and sacred statues collectively worth nearly $14 million, to India. The artifacts were handed over following investigations by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office into international trafficking networks linked to figures such as Subash Kapoor and Nancy Wiener. The repatriation, completed in phases with the final batch arriving recently, marks a significant step in efforts to combat the illegal trade in cultural heritage. This restitution highlights the ongoing recovery of India’s stolen treasures from foreign collections and markets. Among the items is a notable $2 million bronze figure of Avalokiteshvara, underscoring the artistic and historical importance of the returned pieces. Indian officials received the artifacts at a ceremony in New York, with authorities noting that more work remains to address the broader issue of antiquities trafficking. Beyond these recent returns, India continues to seek acknowledgment of the vast cultural wealth looted during colonial times by the British, as well as through later acquisitions and thefts involving Americans and others. Countless artifacts, jewels, manuscripts, and temple treasures were taken from Indian shores over centuries and still reside in museums, private collections, and institutions abroad, representing an immense historical and spiritual legacy that many argue should be rightfully restored to its place of origin. @thetrid.ent
