The Delhi Gymkhana Club, a British-era institution established in 1913, has been directed by the Centre to vacate its 27.3-acre premises at 2, Safdarjung Road in Lutyens’ Delhi by June 5. The prime property, long used by bureaucrats, politicians, business leaders, and other elites, pays only ₹1,000 annual rent to the government under an old lease. The club charges a joining fee of around ₹30 lakh, with waiting lists stretching for decades. The Land and Development Office said the move is needed to strengthen defence infrastructure and improve security in the highly sensitive zone near the Prime Minister’s residence. Officials described the area as strategically important and raised concerns over security risks in such a high-security location. The decision has triggered strong reactions online, with many people calling the arrangement a symbol of elite privilege on public land. Users pointed out that property rates in prime Delhi are extremely high, and said the rent for such a large area should normally be worth several crores every year. Many called it the end of outdated privileges and demanded better accountability for public assets. The move has also sparked debate over security concerns, with some arguing that a large private club operating so close to the PM’s residence creates unnecessary risks. The club is reportedly preparing to challenge the order legally. @thetrid.ent
