QOTD: What was/is your first read of 2021? 😄 . #rishireviews -Darkness by Ratnakar Matkari "Darkness" is an anthology of horror stories that are short, sweet, and entertaining. It has little boys that can predict your date of death, visitors from alternate worlds, apparitions, hauntingly realistic dreams, ghosts of your future self, vampires, and everything else you can possibly imagine. Each story has its own uniqueness and some were written so vividly that you couldn't help but wonder the possibility of them actually happening in the real world. While some were outright "horror" stories others had a subtle thrill factor to them. The writing is fast paced, simple, and engaging. The author delves into the human psyche in a lot of the stories, exploring emotions and feelings such as loneliness, anger, regret, jealousy etc which added a distinctive flair to this book of short stories. My favourite stories of the lot though were, By The Clock, Monsoon Guest, Prayer, and The Man on the Bridge. Though the stories were well-written, some of them felt like they were too rushed and confusing at the end. This could have been because they were lost in translation or maybe just how the author wanted them to end. Either way I feel they would have been better developed as novellas rather than squeezed into a short story. Some stories in the book have content warnings for physical and sexual assault so keep that in mind before you pick it up. All in all, Darkness is a solid book that is amusing, and quick to read. I would definitely pick up more from the author in the future. 😊
