I had bought this book quite a few years ago but it somehow stayed on my tbr shelf until now(as most of my books do 🙈). I honestly didn't remember much of what the book was about when I picked it up to read, except that it's a thriller set in Japan. I think it was a wise decision to go in unaware because the unexpected twists and turns made the reading experience that much more thrilling for me. This book is both a police procedural and an exploration of the human psyche at once, and that element of it was probably why it impressed me as much as it did. I love how the book is told from the different povs, and in the unique way of it being the notes written by the two main characters, Osamu Nonoguchi and Kyoichiro Kaga. Another aspect of the book I loved was how it's not your typical mystery— in the sense that the focus of the book is not so much on the "who" part of the crime but rather the "why". The number of times I was caught unaware by the turn of events kept me interested and kept me guessing (albeit me failing in my guesses 😂). The one thing I wish that could have been better about this book and one that prevented me from giving it a full five stars was the ending. I don't have a problem with how it ended, or the ending itself, but rather how rushed the writing felt at that point especially considering the brilliance of the rest of the book. 😁 To sum it up, I think this is a solid read and one that's must for fans of the genre. It also makes for a great pick if you're in a slump because it's short and to the point. 😊 . (Will leave the blurb in the comments below.)
