Did you enjoy it? . #rishireviews Black Eyed Susans by Julia Heaberlin: is a psychological thriller that follows Tessa, the lone survivor of a serial killer, who was left to die in a ditch filled with piles of bones of the killer's other less fortunate victims. The story shifts between the narratives of Tessie in 1995 and Tessa in the present day with Tessie's story following the events immediately after she is found, the trial that put her attacker in jail, and her mandated therapy sessions, while Tessa's on the other hand tells the story of her life as a mom to a teenage girl, about the guilt and doubt she carries around over the man who's serving his time in jail for the crime, and the terror that her real attacker is still out there taunting her by planting black eyed susans in places important to her. 🌻 . My thoughts: This book was one of those reads that I debated abandoning after reading the first few pages because although the plot was interesting the writing just wasn't working for me. It took me about 100 or so pages to get used to the author's writing but once I did I started to appreciate it and really enjoy the book. The shift of narratives between Tessie and Tessa, i.e the past and present, is done with absolute fluidity and you're constantly craving for more of both. The writer keeps you hooked with mini cliffhangers interspersed throughout the book. The fact that author is an award-winning journalist that has written on some grisly crimes reflects through the way she weaves her words. Tessa as a character is very well written and it is apparent that the author has done her due research on the mannerisms and the psyche of survivors of brutal attacks. Lydia, Tessa's best friend as a teenager, is a very intriguing character too. I could definitely relate more to Lydia than Tessa. The big reveal(of the killer) was a tiny bit unexpected but clichéd. The epilogue however left me wondering about who is "crazier"(a word I usually don't like to use but one that feels apt here). To surmise, this is a "thrilling" read that is sure to keep you engaged and a must for fans of psychological thrillers. 😁
