Dehradun blooms with the shade of Gulsarai! This Poila Boisakh, I found the Bengali in me satay-sfied away from the bustling bylanes, nestled in the heart of Dhakpatti, Old Rajpur Road, at a beautiful café (just like a flower- true to its name) that now feels more like adda. @gulsarai_rajpur .  I’ve been here n number of times in a month and by now I'm sure they all know me from tip to toe nail. From their Cheese Balls (yes, those melt-in-the-mouth, golden beauties that taste suspiciously like our very own “veg chop” replaced with cheese) to Paneer Kanti, which could give Bengal's fine dine outlets a run for money. I even tried a Kashmiri Chicken Yakhni paired with rice and I swear Maa would approve of the cooking of the yoghurt-rich gravy. Then there’s the Hot Chocolate, so thick, so demure, so cutesy it should come with a spoon and a warning. But the real heartstopper? Their dessert lovingly named “Hug in a Mug.” Think chocolate, vanilla, caramel, AND a gooey brownie cake all crammed into one mug. It’s the closest thing to being tucked into a woollen quilt in January. I’ve celebrated the spirit of Bengali New Year in my homey home for over 9 years now, that too with food that may not always scream "Bangali," but definitely hums it in every bite.  If you’re in Dehradun and miss the comfort of home food with a twist, Gulsarai’s your adda.  And if you spot someone already halfway through his second dessert, that’s probably me. Come say hi. Subho Noboborsho from a full heart and a fuller belly. A Bangali is never in wishing for a happy new year.
