Your japa maid can be a lifesaver... but only if you know how to work with them safely. 🤱 I’ve hired japa maids both times when I delivered, and I’m NOT against getting help. New mothers NEED support, especially in those overwhelming first weeks. But there’s a difference between getting help and blindly following harmful traditions. What is a Japa Maid? A japa maid is a traditional postpartum caregiver who supports mothers and newborns during the first 30-45 days after birth. Most of them are traditional, rather than hiring an expert who won’t listen to you - hire someone who will listen to you and be flexible. And most of all - get aware, get informed so you know what boundaries to set and what’s right for your baby. What They CAN Do (and you should encourage): ✅ Massaging you twice ✅ Some also help with meals ✅ Supporting YOU so you can rest and bond ✅ Helping with diaper changes and baby care basics ✅ Assisting with baby’s bath (under your guidance) What You Should NEVER Allow: ❌ Shaking baby’s head while rocking ❌ Putting oil in ears/nostrils ❌ Applying substances to umbilical cord ❌ Giving ajwain water or any liquids except breast milk/formula ❌ Giving formula just because they said you have to ❌ Advising against doctor’s recommendations (like Vitamin D drops) ❌ Co-sleeping with baby when exhausted ❌ Taking baby away immediately after feeds ❌ Preventing YOU from handling your own baby ❌ Rough massage or putting fingers in baby’s mouth ❌ Super tight swaddling around hips Remember: You’re the parent. Your instincts matter. A good japa maid should SUPPORT your parenting, not override it. Set clear boundaries from day one. Your baby needs YOUR warmth, YOUR smell, YOUR touch. Help should enhance this bond, not replace it. Tell me what your experience has been if you’ve ever hired one!
