Aish has been asking me not to leave the house, doesn’t want me to Nemy, and has these REALLY BIG emotions she can’t quite name. And you know what? This is completely normal. Let’s be real - becoming a sibling is probably one of the biggest transitions a child will ever go through. Here’s what I’ve learned as both a parent and educator: ✨ Their feelings are real - even when they don’t make sense. They can love their sibling AND feel upset about everything. ✨ It’s often not jealousy of the baby, but sadness about losing their special place with us. ✨ How we handle this time can affect how siblings get along for their whole lives. Some adults still feel like their sibling was “the favorite” because of what happened when they were little. ✨ When we listen to their feelings (instead of saying “you’re fine”), children actually feel better faster. ✨ Alone time with them is necessary. Even 10-15 minutes of 1:1 time them helps so much. ✨ Let them help with the baby when they want to, and respect when they DO NOT want to. The hardest part? Being there for their big feelings while also taking care of a newborn. Some days feel impossible. But when we take their emotions seriously, they learn to handle feelings better AND usually end up closer to their sibling. Some things you can say to validate their experience: • “It’s hard when things change so much” • “You can love your sibling and feel upset at the same time” • “All of your feelings are okay” • “It makes sense that you feel confused right now” • “You’re allowed to have big feelings about this” To the parents sailing on the same boat - you’re not alone. Your child isn’t being difficult - they’re dealing with one of life’s biggest changes. What helped your family? Share below 👇 . . . . .
