Your boss just said "you're too in the weeds" and "not strategic enough" for the next role. Don't spiral. Don't get defensive. And definitely don't go quiet and hope the next review magically goes better. Here's what they're actually telling you — you're so good at doing the work that they can't imagine you doing anything else. That's not a performance problem. That's a positioning problem. And it's fixable. Step 1: In the moment, stay calm and ask this — "Can you give me a specific example of what strategic looks like for that role?" This forces them to define the vague label they just threw at you. Most managers can't answer this clearly because they haven't thought it through either. Step 2: Ask who in the organization they consider strategic. Then study those people. You'll notice they don't work harder than you. They just communicate differently. They talk about impact and outcomes, not tasks and deadlines. Step 3: Change how you present your work starting this week. Instead of "I finished the project on time" say "This project cut turnaround by 20% and directly supports our Q3 goal." Same work. Different perception. Step 4: Set a 30-day check-in. Tell your boss you're applying the feedback and want to revisit the conversation in a month. This puts a timeline on their vague words and shows ownership. Step 5: Get visible above your boss. Join a cross-functional project. Share an insight with your skip-level. Volunteer for a presentation. The people who decide your promotion need to know your name before your name comes up. Save this. Share it with someone stuck in the same spot. And follow for more career strategies that actually work. {not strategic enough for promotion, how to get promoted at work, boss says too in the weeds, career growth tips, how to respond to feedback at work, promotion strategy, strategic thinking at work, how to be seen as a leader, performance review tips, corporate career advice, how to talk to your boss about promotion, visibility at work, career coaching tips, leadership skills for promotion, how to ask for a raise} #careergrowth #promotiontips #corporateadvice #careerstrategy #leadershipskills
