How I plan a job switch without quitting first. Most people do it backwards. They wait until they're burned out, frustrated, or pushed to the edge. Then they rage-quit and scramble to find something new. That's not a plan. That's panic. Here's how to do it strategically so you're in control the entire time: Step 1: Get clear on what you actually want. Not just "more money" or "better culture." Get specific. What role? What industry? What salary range? What kind of manager? What daily responsibilities? Clarity kills confusion. Step 2: Build your exit while you're still employed. Update your resume. Optimize your LinkedIn. Start conversations with recruiters. Build visibility in your target industry. Do all of this while you still have a paycheck and leverage. Step 3: Set a timeline, not a deadline. Give yourself 3 to 6 months to explore, network, and interview. This removes the desperation and lets you be selective. You're not running away from something. You're moving toward something better. Step 4: Interview like you already have options. Because you do. You're employed. You're not begging for a job. You're evaluating if they deserve your time. This mindset shift changes how you show up in interviews. Step 5: Don't tell anyone at work until you have a signed offer. Not your work bestie. Not your manager. Not HR. Keep it quiet until it's official. Once you have a signed offer, give notice professionally and leave on good terms. The difference between a messy job switch and a strategic one is preparation.
