You thought you were doing great at work all year. Then your year end review hits and your manager says you’re not meeting expectations. Blindsided. Most people walk into reviews hoping for the best. The ones who walk out with promotions and raises prepared for it months in advance. The difference is never talent. It’s preparation. Three things that will make sure you’re never caught off guard in a review again. First, keep a career receipts document all year. Every Friday, write down one win, one challenge you handled, one positive thing someone said about your work. When review time comes, you won’t be scrambling to remember what you did in March. You’ll have proof. Second, connect your work to what the business actually cares about. Your manager isn’t judged on how many tasks you completed. They’re judged on outcomes. So when you talk about your work, tie it back to the goals that matter. Revenue, efficiency, retention, growth. That’s what gets remembered. Third, know the value that only you bring. What do people come to you for? What breaks when you’re not around? What problems do you solve that nobody else wants to touch? If you can’t articulate this clearly, your manager can’t either. And if they can’t, it won’t show up in your review. Your review shouldn’t be the first time your manager hears about your impact. It should be a summary of what they already know. Swipe through the carousel for the full breakdown. Save this for your next review cycle. Send it to someone who needs to start preparing now.
