5 small things that will make people take you more seriously at work. No promotions needed. No title changes. Just shifts in how you show up. 1. Stop saying "sorry" when you mean "thank you." Instead of "sorry for the delay" say "thank you for your patience." One makes you sound in control. The other makes you sound like you messed up. 2. Speak slower in meetings. The person who pauses and speaks with intention is the one everyone listens to. Rushing makes you sound nervous. Slowing down makes you sound like you know exactly what you're saying. 3. Stop over explaining yourself. "I can't take this on right now, I have a deadline this week" is enough. The more you explain, the more it sounds like you're asking for permission. 4. Follow up in writing. Had a verbal conversation about a deadline? Send a short email after. "Just confirming what we discussed." Takes 30 seconds. Makes you impossible to blame when things go sideways. 5. Dress one level above your role. People form impressions in the first 5 seconds. When you take yourself seriously, others follow. None of these require permission. They only depend on you deciding that how you're perceived matters just as much as how hard you work. Save this. Try one tomorrow.
