Being liked feels safe. Being trusted is what actually grows your career. And for a long time I confused the two. I thought showing up for everyone, always being available, always being warm and approachable was how you built a reputation as a leader. What I did not realise is that when you are always accommodating, people stop seeing you as someone who makes decisions. They see you as someone who supports them. And there is nothing wrong with being supportive. But if that is all people see, you will keep getting passed over for the roles that require someone to lead. Warmth is not the problem. Warmth without presence is. Speak when it adds something. Hold your ground without being cold. Be approachable but not endlessly available. That shift from being liked to being respected is quiet.
