Your manager drops a task on your desk at 5:30pm and needs it by morning. Your first instinct is to either push back or just say yes and open your laptop at midnight. Both are going to cost you. One makes you look difficult. The other trains people to treat your time like it has no limit. Say this instead. "I want to make sure I deliver this well. I have a couple of things I am wrapping up tonight. Can you help me understand what part is most urgent so I can prioritise accordingly?" This works because it does three things at once. It shows you are taking the request seriously. It sets a boundary without sounding like a complaint. It puts the decision back in their hands without you overcommitting. You are not saying no. You are saying not blindly yes. And that is a skill most people spend years learning. Save this for the next 5:30pm ambush. 😅 Which one do you usually default to: push back or just absorb it?
