You delivered the project. Someone else got the promotion. Sound familiar? In offices, credit isn’t earned. It’s claimed. You can be the one who stayed late, ran the analysis, solved the problem, and delivered the project. But if someone else speaks up first, they get the recognition. Work doesn’t speak for itself. People are loud. And if you don’t shape the story, someone else will. Claim what’s yours early. Before a project even launches, casually mention what you’re working on. That way, when results land, people already link it to you. Speak last in meetings. It’s basic psychology. The last voice sticks. Even if you’re repeating a point, you become the name attached to the idea. Use “we” strategically. When the boss is listening, say “We ran the analysis and found X.” You’re giving credit but still staying at the center of the action. Give public credit. Credit teammates loudly in front of leadership. They’ll thank you privately later, and you still look like the leader who orchestrates results. Reframe failures as fixes. If something goes wrong, position yourself as the problem-solver, not the culprit. Owning the fix makes people forget who broke it. Stop working in silence while others take credit for your work.
