This piece is from my book In Darkness and in Light. It’s about the quiet ache of being misunderstood — when your inner world feels like a language no one else speaks. Research by Epley & Keysar (2004) found that most of us overestimate how clearly we communicate our feelings. We think the subtext in our words is obvious — but people hear us through the filter of their own experiences. So often, others only ever see the cover of your story. They don’t notice the chapters you wrote in the dark, or the pages you tore out before anyone could read them. That’s why being truly “read” feels rare and sacred — it happens only with those who take the time to learn your language, one page at a time. Sometimes, you are a story meant only for a few to tell. And that’s not loneliness. That’s legacy. #CommunicationBias #PerspectiveTaking #BeingMisunderstood #QuietRecognition #poetrycommunity #thoughtsintowords #InnerGrowth #SelfReflection #ruhiwrites #readthisagain
