Just One Door Down from Paradise There's a particular kind of restaurant that Gurugram desperately needs more of. Not another temple to molecular gastronomy, not yet another "world cuisine" spot serving everything from sushi to samosas with equal mediocrity, but something far rarer: a neighbourhood restaurant that actually understands what neighbourhoods want. One Door Down, tucked away in Sushant Lok, is precisely that kind of place. And on a recent visit, I discovered that it's doing something even more ambitious than simply feeding the locals well—it's creating the kind of convivial, music-filled, food-centric experience that transforms dinner into an evening. The Mediterranean by Way of Everywhere The menu announces itself as Mediterranean with "global twists," which could easily be code for confusion. But here's where One Door Down gets it right: they've understood that Mediterranean cooking isn't about rigid authenticity but about a sensibility—fresh ingredients, bold flavours, and food designed for sharing. The global twists aren't desperate attempts to be all things to all people; they're thoughtful nods to what actually works. Take the Falafel & Tabbouleh plate. Now, I've eaten more falafels than I care to count, from the streets of Beirut to the bistros of Paris, and most restaurants in India serve something that tastes vaguely of chickpeas and disappointment. These were different—properly crisp on the outside, fluffy within, accompanied by a vibrant couscous tabbouleh that had clearly been made by someone who understands that herbs aren't garnish, they're the main event. The zhoug was properly fiery, the hummus silky, and the house pickles had that elusive balance of tang and crunch that separates the amateur from the professional. But it was the Sweet Corn Cornetto that made me sit up and take notice. Cottage cheese and sweet corn might sound like the sort of combination dreamed up in a chain restaurant's test kitchen, but here, lifted with spinach, the crunch of walnuts, the sweetness of raisins, and finished with whipped feta, it became something rather special. This is fusion done right—not random ingredients thrown together.
