Finally, The Real Punjab Comes to Gurugram A restaurant that understands the difference between Punjabi food and what passes for it in most NCR establishments. There's a particular kind of disappointment that food lovers in Gurugram have become accustomed to. You hear about a new North Indian restaurant, you read the menu with its promises of tandoori this and makhanwala that, and you think: perhaps this time. Perhaps this time someone will get it right. And then you arrive, and it's the same story all over again. The butter chicken is sweet enough to be dessert. The dal makhani tastes like it came from a packet. The naan is dense and chewy rather than soft and pillowy. And you realize, once again, that authenticity is the rarest ingredient in most kitchens. Which is why my recent visit to Panjab House Kitchen & Bar felt like stumbling upon a secret that's been hiding in plain sight on the second floor of AIPL Joy Central in Sector 65. The Space Tells a Story The first thing you notice about Panjab House isn't the aroma of food (though that comes quickly enough). It's the refusal to subscribe to the chrome-and-glass aesthetic that dominates most mall restaurants. The mud-textured walls and colorful accents aren't trying to create some sanitized, Instagram-friendly version of Punjab. They're creating an atmosphere that feels genuinely rustic—the sort of space where you wouldn't be surprised to see an elderly *bibi* emerge from the kitchen, wiping her hands on her *dupatta* before serving you another *parantha*. It's a lively space, but not chaotically so. There's a warmth here that's difficult to manufacture, the kind that comes from people who actually understand the culture they're representing rather than just appropriating its signifiers. Beyond the Expected While the gravies and tandoori items would be enough to establish Panjab House's credentials, it's the touches beyond the obvious that elevate the experience. The Mango Mastani Lassi isn't trying to be trendy or fusion-y; it's simply what happens when you take a traditional beverage seriously and execute it well.
