A Theater of Spirits: Potions Rewrites Delhi's Cocktail Script There's a particular thrill that comes with discovering a space that refuses to play by the usual rules. Delhi, for all its culinary vigor and expanding nightlife, has long needed a venue that treats cocktails not as mere lubricants for conversation but as narratives worth experiencing. Potions: Cocktail Theatre at Ambawatta One in Mehrauli promises exactly that—and delivers with considerable panache. The location itself carries a certain poetry. Mehrauli, with its layered history and the Qutub Minar standing sentinel in the distance, provides an atmospheric backdrop that few Delhi neighborhoods can match. Potions occupies this space with confidence, positioning itself as the capital's only cocktail theater—a bold claim, but one that becomes easier to appreciate once you understand what they're attempting. Conceptualized by entrepreneur Sahil Baweja and celebrity Sunny Leone, the venue represents an interesting marriage of entertainment sensibility and hospitality ambition. But what sets it apart is the vision of Kamal Kohli, whose cocktail program abandons the tired conventions of flavor-forward menus in favor of something more intriguing: emotional storytelling. The Theater Begins The debut menu, evocatively titled 'Love & Its Aftermath', approaches cocktail-making as narrative construction. Each drink charts a different emotional landscape—the excitement, tension, longing and reflection that define modern relationships. It's an ambitious framework, and one that could easily veer into pretension. Yet the execution demonstrates both technical sophistication and a genuine commitment to the theatrical premise. I began with Ms & Ms, described as "two bold personalities finding a perfect, silky rhythm." The combination of Mathania chili tequila and passion fruit clarified whey might sound improbable on paper, but the drink achieves a remarkable balance. There's heat, yes, but it's measured and integrated rather than dominating. The clarified whey technique lends a textural elegance that makes the entire experience feel polished and purposeful—precisely what the description promises.
