No one really prepares you for how memory works when you live abroad. It’s not always the big, obvious things that stay with you. It’s the tiny, almost forgettable moments that come back out of nowhere. Like hearing a certain song and suddenly being reminded of a random car ride back home. Or smelling something familiar and being taken back to your kitchen without warning. Even something as simple as the way evenings felt back home can catch you off guard. I’ve had moments where I couldn’t even explain what I was missing. Not a place, not a person specifically, just a feeling. A version of normal that I didn’t realise was so comforting until it was gone. And the hardest part is that you can’t fully recreate it. You can try through food, routines, calls, or little habits, but it never feels exactly the same. But maybe that’s not the point. Maybe it’s about learning to carry those small things with you, instead of trying to go back to them. To let them ground you, not hold you back. Because living abroad doesn’t take those moments away. It just makes you realise how much they meant in the first place.
