Living in the UK has been an eye-opening experience for me as an Indian. It’s a mix of little joys, cultural quirks, and moments that make me laugh, think, or sometimes feel a little out of place. Everyone likes Indian food here, but I’ve realised most people don’t think beyond the usual dishes. It’s funny and frustrating at the same time, because food is so much more than just curry and rice. Then there’s the politeness everywhere. People say “sorry” so much, sometimes for the tiniest thing, accidentally brushing past you, cutting in a queue, or even just moving past you in the street. At first, it felt sweet and thoughtful. Now, I notice it everywhere, and I can’t help but wonder if it’s always genuine. The obsession with the weather is real. I love it as a conversation starter, but sometimes it feels like the only thing people talk about. And yet, it’s strangely comforting to know that everyone shares the same small talk ritual. The greetings here are polite and light, “alright?” “you good?” and I love that I’m not expected to give a long answer every time. But sometimes I wish I could share more about my day without it feeling out of place. And yes, living here is independent. Everything is organised, structured, and systems make life easier. But that independence can also feel isolating. On a quiet evening, when everyone is busy with their own lives, I realise how much I miss having a support system nearby, friends or family I can call at a moment’s notice. Living abroad is a mix of love and hate, comfort and challenge. It’s learning to balance who I was with who I’m becoming, and appreciating the little things in a new culture while holding on to my roots.
