Language is one of those things you never think about… until it starts changing. I’ve caught myself hesitating over the simplest words, the kind that used to come effortlessly. Like explaining something emotional and realising the exact word only exists in my native language, but I’m halfway through the sentence in English. Or calling home and switching between languages without even noticing, starting a sentence in one, finishing it in another, and somehow expecting it to make sense. There have been moments where I’ve had to pause mid-conversation, searching for a word I know I know… but it just won’t come to me. And instead, I settle for something that doesn’t quite capture what I mean. Even humour changes. The way I joke, the references I use, the rhythm of how I speak, it all feels slightly different depending on who I’m talking to. And when I go back home, it’s even more obvious. The mixing, the pauses, the slight disconnect. Things that used to feel natural now take a second longer. It’s such a subtle shift, but it stays with you. Because it’s not just about learning a new language or adapting to a new way of speaking, it’s about holding onto a part of your identity that was once effortless, and realising it now requires intention. language change living abroad, losing native language abroad, bilingual struggles, mixing languages, expat identity, living abroad experiences, cultural identity abroad, language barrier abroad, thinking in another language, translating in your head, expat life reality, adapting to new culture, moving abroad experience, identity shift abroad, language and identity, bilingual life abroad, speaking multiple languages, expat challenges, cultural adjustment, international living, life abroad reflections, personal growth abroad, homesickness language, communication abroad, expat lifestyle, relocating overseas, cross cultural communication, language adaptation, identity abroad, living in a new country, emotional impact of moving abroad #nri #fyp #expatlife #indiangirls #uklife
