After Vietnam our next destination was Siem Reap, the small town in Cambodia that is the gateway to Angkor Wat, the 400 square km archeological site housing Hindu and Buddhist temples. We visited Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, Bayon Temple, Ta Prom Temple and some more places over three days. To truly explore all the places, you will actually need a week. It was fascinating to learn about the spread of Hinduism is South-East Asia, and how alternate kings with different religions (Hindu and Buddhist) kept on changing the deities in the temples. It is heartening to see that Archaeological Survey of India is collaborating with the Cambodian government to restore some of the sites. Siem Reap itself is a cute town with its own nightlife. We explored a large buffet at a Cambodian restaurant with a live cultural performance. I found Cambodian food pretty close to Thai food in taste with delicacies like Tom Yumm and Som Tam. Coconut gravy based Fish Amok, the national dish of Cambodia was served to us in a tender coconut (just like some of the Bengali restaurants serve Daab Chingri). Was surprised to see that they have a beer brand named Hanuman. #Cambodia #siemreap #angkorwat #angkor #Travel #Travelogue #instatravelling
