JSW-MG and Skoda-Volkswagen India have begun early exploratory talks to assess a potential partnership involving shared platforms, powertrains and even joint investments. According to sources, both groups have shown interest, but the conversations are still at a very early stage—more about checking strategic alignment than negotiating a deal. The talks come at a time when carmakers in India are increasingly looking to share vehicle architectures to control development costs, boost localisation, and scale up hybrid and EV programmes. Skoda-VW’s involvement is especially significant as the group has been actively searching for an Indian partner for over a year to support its new India strategy. It needs stronger local scale, additional capital, and backing for a fresh India-focused platform expected to require nearly €1 billion. One of the ideas being evaluated is a three-way structure between JSW–SAIC–Skoda-VW, leveraging existing Skoda-VW–SAIC ties in China to simplify tech exchange and model sourcing. SAIC is said to be open to collaborative arrangements to secure its long-term India presence amid rising regulatory and geopolitical pressure. Meanwhile, JSW’s separate discussions with Chery for its upcoming JSW Auto brand have hit hurdles over technology transfer and data access—common challenges for Indian firms working with Chinese OEMs. If the JSW-MG-SAIC-Skoda-VW framework progresses, it could result in one of India’s most unique multi-continent alliances, blending European engineering, Chinese EV expertise, and Indian scale under a single collaboration. #jswmgmotorindia #škoda
