In 2023, kulfi was ranked among the world’s top street foods by Taste Atlas. But for many of us, kulfi is far more than just a dessert. It is the taste of Kolkata summers and childhood memories frozen in time. Long before fancy ice cream parlours took over the city, every para had its own kulfiwala. You could hear the bell from a distance as he slowly made his way through the lanes with a huge handi wrapped in red cloth, packed with crushed ice and rows of kulfis sitting inside their metal moulds. Today, many of those handis have been replaced by ice boxes and the old metal moulds by plastic.
