This Saraswati temple in Howrah is believed to be the oldest in Bengal, and what makes it truly special is that Saraswati has been worshipped here every single day for more than a hundred years. The story begins with Umesh Chandra Das, the first headmaster of Howrah Zilla School. He believed deeply in education and wanted Saraswati to be worshipped daily at home, not just once a year. He shared this wish with his four sons but passed away before he could see it fulfilled. In 1919, his son Ronesh Chandra Das brought back a white marble Saraswati idol carved in Rajasthan and in 1923, on the day of Snanjatra, worship formally commenced here. Even today, nitya puja continues. While Saraswati is worshipped here throughout the year, special arrangements are made on Saraswati Puja, when the temple comes alive and the pujo is carried out on a grand scale, with family members and devotees coming together. Had you heard of this temple before? Save this reel, share it with someone who loves Bengal’s history, and tell us in the comments, what stories like these should we document next?
