
Raqs Sharqi grew out of local folk and social dances and took its modern form in 1920s Cairo nightclubs, shaped by Western influences. Today, it’s danced everywhere, from Nile boats and hotels to grand Egyptian weddings. Tanoura is much older. Born in the 12th century as a Sufi spiritual ritual, its continuous spinning symbolises devotion and the universe, blending music, poetry, and hypnotic movement. One celebrates life and rhythm, the other faith and transcendence, both unmistakably Egyptian.
