On the eve of Rabindranath Tagore’s birthday, let’s step into one of Kolkata’s oldest surviving schools - the 195-year-old The Oriental Seminary. Founded in 1829 by educator Gour Mohan Addy, the school was revolutionary for its time. It offered English education without the Christian missionary influence that dominated many other institutions of that era. And among the many students who once walked these corridors was a young Rabindranath Tagore. But Oriental Seminary was more than just a school. During the 19th and 20th centuries, it became known for its Shakespearean performances, introducing generations of Bengali students to English literature and theatre. And somehow, it feels fitting that a school which celebrated literature and performance also shaped the imagination of a child who would one day redefine poetry, music, education, and art itself. Jonmodine pronaam, Gurudeb. May your legacy continue to inspire, encourage, and guide generations.
