In the first episode of Know Your Kolkata series, where we tell you the stories behind the names, streets and neighbourhoods of the city, we come to Bow Barracks, an area synonymous with Christmas celebrations in Kolkata. Bow Barracks traces its origins to the First World War. Barracks were built in Central Kolkata to house British (said American in error in the video) soldiers stationed here. Finding the accommodation unsuitable, the soldiers shifted to Fort William, leaving the buildings unused. These flats were later handed over to the Calcutta Improvement Trust and rented out, primarily to the city’s growing Anglo-Indian community. Following the 1950s and later the Bangladesh Liberation War, the Barracks became home to a diverse mix of Anglo-Indians, Hindus, Muslims and Christians, living side by side. Quiet for most of the year, Bow Barracks comes alive during Christmas and New Year, when returning families, lights, music and celebration transform the lanes keeping its unique spirit and shared history alive.
