Take one look at that steeple and you’ll know why it is called the "Rocket Church". But behind the quirky nickname lies one of Bengal’s prettiest old churches, St. Stephen’s, established in 1844 in what was once Surman’s Gardens of the East India Company. Built with a slender spire that was meant to look like a ship’s lantern, this was the first church travellers would see as they entered the city. Near the church once stood Hastings’ Bridge, India’s first iron bridge and even the gallows where Nunda Kumar was hanged in 1775. Watch the reel to discover the story of Kolkata’s very own Rocket Church.
