Amid the ongoing conflict in West Asia, residents of Kashmir, particularly in Shia-dominated areas of Budgam and Baramulla, have launched a massive drive collecting cash, gold jewellery, silver items, livestock, copper utensils, and even children's piggy banks to support war-affected civilians in Iran. Volunteers went door-to-door after Eid, gathering contributions estimated by organizers in the range of hundreds of crores of rupees, with some local accounts claiming figures as high as ₹500 crore in a short span. The Iranian Embassy in India has expressed deep gratitude for the gesture, stating that “this kindness will never be forgotten” and thanking the people of India, while images of large portraits of Iranian leaders appeared in Srinagar localities alongside the donation points. Many Kashmiri Muslims, including women who sold or donated family jewellery and a widow who gave away a 28-year-old gold memento of her late husband, participated enthusiastically, viewing it as an act of religious and humanitarian solidarity. However, the outpouring has sparked widespread debate and questions on social media about their loyalty to India. Critics point out that while Kashmiri Muslims have donated crores worth of valuables to Iran during its wartime crisis, there has been no comparable large-scale donation drive from the same community for relief efforts or causes within India itself, raising concerns over divided allegiances in the sensitive region. The episode has once again highlighted the complex layers of identity, faith, and nationality in Kashmir. @thetrid.ent
