We often hear this: “We grew up watching TV and we turned out fine.” And that’s true. But the screens our children are exposed to today are not the same screens we grew up with. Our childhood TV had: – limited timings – slower storytelling – natural breaks – zero personalisation Today’s screens are: Always available. Fast-paced. Designed to keep little brains hooked. Toddlers aren’t just watching anymore — they’re tapping, swiping, scrolling, and receiving instant stimulation their developing brains aren’t ready to process. During these early years, their brains are busy building the basics: attention, language, emotional regulation, and self-control. When screens replace real-world experiences too often, it can show up as: • fewer back-and-forth conversations • shorter attention spans • difficulty winding down • reduced physical exploration • bigger emotional reactions • sensory overload This isn’t about fear or guilt. It’s about understanding how different childhood looks today. Little ones learn best through: faces, voices, movement, play, and connection — not perfectly edited videos. Screens may have a place later, in small doses, with adult involvement. But they can never replace presence, play, and real human connection. What’s your approach to screen time at home?
