We grew up on chocolates, candies, and mithai and turned out fine…so why is sugar suddenly such a big no-no for toddlers today? Or kids today? Here is why… Back in the days, sweets were a treat — homemade laddoos from dadi/nani, mithai on festivals, candy after school (not daily), or chocolate on birthdays. But times have changed. The difference isn’t sugar itself…it’s how much, how often, and in what form kids are getting it today. Earlier: occasional indulgence + lots of outdoor play. Now: sugar sneaks into EVERYTHING — packaged snacks, cereals, juices, even ‘healthy foods.’ That’s why doctors warn about toddler sugar intake. Today — when toddlers eat something high in sugar (like cakes, chocolate, laddoo), it gets digested very quickly into glucose. This causes a rapid rise in blood sugar — their body then pumps out insulin to balance it. Result? A short burst of hyper energy (“sugar rush”) followed by a sudden crash — crankiness, fussiness, even tantrums. Sugar activated the dopamine reward system into the brain — the same “feel good” thing. For a toddler’s developing brain, that dopamine hit is extra powerful. Each time they eat sugar, their brain remembers the “happy feeling” — making them want more. Over time, this can condition them to prefer sweet foods over natural ones (like fruits and veggies). Early years are critical for building bones, brain, and immunity. Sugar adds energy but steals space from the nutrients that matter most. Babies need every bite to count for nutrition — and sugar gives only calories, no nutrients. It sets taste preferences too early. It stresses their tiny bodies with blood sugar swings and higher cavity risk. Does this mean your child can never touch sweets? No! Childhood without the joy of chocolates and sweets sounds unfair. But it does mean: delay introducing sugar until 2. Limiting it and keeping it occasional, not daily. Focus on whole foods, fruits, and natural sweetness. So yes, we turned out fine because sweets were occasional and we were playing outside for hours. Time was different. #toddlerhood #parentingjourney #̭parentingtips #parentingdoneright #parentingishard #parenthood #toddlermeals #nosugar
