So many of our hard toddler moments come from expecting things their little brains just aren’t ready for yet. These are 5 expectations I’ve consciously let go of with my toddler — and it’s made parenting gentler for both of us 👇 ——— 1️⃣ Expecting them to listen the first time I used to think, “I said it once, why isn’t he listening?” But toddlers are discovering independence. That “no” isn’t misbehaviour — it’s development. ——— 2️⃣ Expecting sharing to come naturally “Share nicely” sounds simple… but it isn’t for them. Toddlers don’t really understand ownership yet. Sharing and turn-taking are skills — they’re taught over time. ——— 3️⃣ Expecting them to control big emotions When I say “calm down,” it rarely works. Because toddlers don’t have impulse control yet. They don’t need correction in that moment — they need co-regulation. ——— 4️⃣ Expecting them to sit still through meals Sitting for 30 minutes is hard for adults too 😅 Short attention spans + endless curiosity = getting up often. It’s not bad behaviour — it’s age-appropriate. ——— 5️⃣ Expecting them to clean up alone “Clean your toys” can feel overwhelming to them. What feels small to us feels huge to them.
