We’ve been asking the wrong question for years. “How was school?” And getting the same answer every single time. “Fine.” Fine is not an answer. Fine is a door closing in your face. Fine is a child who learned it’s easier to say nothing than to say everything. And after a whole day apart — a day of holding it together, following rules, managing big feelings, trying to fit in — they walk out of that door eyes searching for you. Not for a question. For a soft landing. But without realising it— we greet them with pressure instead of presence. ❌ “Did you behave?” ❌ “Did you finish your lunch?” ❌ “What did you learn today?” Harmless questions. But to a child who’s held it together all day — they feel like another task. Another test. Another expectation. And so they say fine. And the door closes. And we wonder why they stop talking to us as they get older. Here’s what I’ve learned. Children don’t share on command. They share when they feel safe. When the question feels like curiosity — not interrogation. Give them the hug first. The long one. The one you don’t let go of until they do. Then try this: ✅ “I’m so happy to see you.” ✅ “Looks like you had a big day.” ✅ “What made you laugh today?” ✅ “Who did something kind?” ✅ “Was there a moment that felt hard?” These aren’t big questions. But they open big conversations. Because safety before lessons. Presence before pressure. Connection before correction. I’ve learned more about Saige’s world in five minutes of the right questions than in years of “how was school.” She tells me everything. Not because I push. But because she trusts the space we’ve built. One question at a time. One hug at a time. One soft landing at a time. The door is always there. You just have to knock differently. And the time to start is not when they’re teenagers and the door is already locked. It’s now. Today. When they still run to you. #parentingtips #toddlerlife #toddlermomlife #parentingadvice #toddlerbehaviour
