Does it surprise you that ALL of these “buh’s” actually count as 5 different words? These early sound attempts are called approximations… basically your toddler’s way of saying, “I know this word, I just can’t quite say it yet.” They’re still learning how to coordinate all the pieces: 👅 mouth movements 🧠 brain connections 🫁 breath and voice 🗣️ sounds that match meaning And when they use the same sound for a few different things? That’s not a problem at all, it’s actually a really good sign! It means they’re trying, practicing, and figuring out how language works. Research tells us that using approximations is a super normal and important developmental step before toddlers start saying full, clear words. Quick tip: Keep modeling the full word clearly and naturally.
