Kind children don’t just happen by chance; they have parents and teachers who model kind behaviour and foster their growth. Here are 7 things you can do today to nurture your child’s kindness: 1️⃣ MODEL KINDNESS CONSTANTLY: Young kids learn most by imitation. Let then see you say “please,” “thank you,” apologize sincerely, help others, and speak gently — even when you’re frustrated. 2️⃣ RESPOND TO MISTAKES WITH CALMNESS: Accidents happen. Being panicked or upset doesn’t make them any better. If you teach your kid to calmly problem-solve their way through fixing a problem, that’s how they’ll treat ither people too. 3️⃣ CALL OUT KIND BEHAVIOUR SPECIFICALLY: Instead of “good job,” say- “That was kind of you to share your toy — look how happy it made him.” This helps kids understand what kindness is, not just that it’s “good.” 4️⃣ ENCOURAGE HELPING WITH REAL TASKS: Let them help set the table, carry groceries, or comfort a sibling. Feeling useful builds a natural desire to help others. 5️⃣ TEACH RESPECTFUL BEHAVIOUR AROUND SHARING: Practice phrases like “Can I have a turn?” and show what gentle hands look like. Small kids want to be kind but lack the tools. 6️⃣ NAME FEELINGS (THEIR’S & OTHER’S): Help them connect kindness to emotions: “She’s crying — she might feel sad. What could help her feel better?” This builds empathy long before abstract moral reasoning develops. 7️⃣ MODEL GRACE & COURTESY: Practice skills like asking “May I join you?”, offering to help, interrupting politely. Demonstrate once, slowly, using minimal words — then let the child practice later own their own.
