WHAT DOES IT MEAN WHEN A TODDLER BITES? biting in toddlers is common and can mean: 1. They want comfort or attention. 2. They’re teething, hungry, or overwhelmed. 3. They find it difficult to express big feelings with words. It doesn’t mean your child is “bad.” It’s a call for support and understanding. 1️⃣ Don’t shout or react angrily It’s natural to feel upset, but shouting or scolding can make your toddler feel frightened or defensive. Try instead: Breathe deeply, speak calmly, and let your child know, “I’m here to help.” 2️⃣ Don’t bite back or use threats Biting your child back or saying things like “See how it feels?” can confuse and scare them. Try instead: Gently say, “Biting hurts. Let’s be kind to each other.” 3️⃣ Don’t punish harshly Harsh punishments or shaming time-outs don’t teach empathy or self-control. Try instead: Firmly and kindly say, “Biting is not OK. Let’s find another way to tell me what you need.” 4️⃣ Don’t ignore the behaviour Pretending it didn’t happen or hoping it will stop on its own can send mixed messages. Try instead: Comfort the person who is hurt. Then, gently explain that biting isn’t safe, and show your toddler what to do instead. 5️⃣ Don’t laugh it off or make jokes Laughing can make your child think it’s funny or acceptable. Try instead: Take it seriously. Acknowledge feelings and show the right way to express them. 6️⃣ Don’t compare to other children Saying things like “Other children don’t do this” can make your toddler feel ashamed or inadequate.
