You tried labeling your kid’s emotions and they got WORSE? Sometimes even labeling FAILS... Here’s what ACTUALLY works 🧠💙 • LABEL IT LATER (or don’t label at all if they hate it) DURING THE MELTDOWN: Say “I hear you” instead of naming feelings Get down to their eye level Use a calm voice, not teaching voice Wait 6+ seconds for their brain to calm down Fix the real problem (hungry? tired? overstimulated?) AFTER THEY’RE CALM: Now you can say “You were really mad when that broke” Match their actual emotion (don’t guess wrong) Use simple words they understand Talk about what happened, not during the storm IF YOUR KID HATES LABELING: Just be there with them Stay calm yourself - they feel your energy Say “Let’s figure this out” instead of emotion words Some kids don’t like feelings talked about (and that’s OK!) WHAT PREVENTS MELTDOWNS: Read emotion books when they’re happy Say your own feelings out loud (“I’m frustrated with this traffic”) Notice what triggers them Practice calm-down breathing when everyone’s good REMEMBER: Sometimes “I’m here with you” works better than any feeling word. Your calm = their calm 🤗 Save this for tough moments! . . . . . . . #ParentingTips #ToddlerMeltdowns #EmotionalRegulation #ParentingScience
