Neuroscientists Jorge Moll and colleagues found in 2006 that acts of giving and being relied upon activate the brain’s ventral striatum — the same reward pathway that lights up for food or safety. Your nervous system tags it as proof that you matter, that your existence fits into the web of others. When this role is missing, research by Naomi Eisenberger at UCLA in 2003 showed that the brain’s social pain circuits — the anterior cingulate cortex and insula — react the same way they do to physical pain.
