Long before stories were written down, before surnames or archives, time was stored elsewhere. In hair. In fibre. In what a body grew, shed, and left behind. Science already knows this. Hair carries a chronological record of survival. Stress, nutrition, environment, endurance. Logged centimetre by centimetre. Readable long after the moment has passed. The same methods used to study human hair are used on animal hair. Wool becomes evidence. Of climate. Of diet. Of how a body lived through seasons. A pattu is made from that hair. Which means it is not just clothing. It is material memory. A record of pastoral life, labour, weather, survival. Often the only record left. If your forefathers raised a sheep, and its hair was spun into a pattu, you can touch what they touched even if you never met them. Even if no stories survived.
