When men move back to India, the decision is largely professional. They evaluate jobs, income, family business opportunities etc. Their independence is rarely questioned. Men do not lose any freedoms by going back. They retain the ability to go out, dress without being criticised constantly and prioritise work without constant domestic expectation. Their professional identity continues to be respected. For women, the cost of going back is different. Returning home often means increased supervision—of movement, what you wear, how you present yourself , schedules, who you hang out with, (even for the most basic things like how you keep your hair skin weight ??? ) Safety is used as justification, but the result is loss of FREEDOM. Boundaries that exist while living abroad are no longer there. A woman who speaks up is called difficult, rude, or ungrateful. so many of us have heard “tumhe ladka hona chahiye tha or jyada padh liya na isliye ye problem hui hai” often from our own tribe. Not as praise btw. A way of saying you are stepping outside what is acceptable for a daughter. The constant judgement, interference, and the need to explain everyday choices create a sense of suffocation. Home stops being a place of rest and becomes a space where behaviour must be managed. This is why the same decision produces different outcomes. Men return to opportunity. Women return to restrictions. Until independence is recognised equally, going back will remain an option for men and a compromise for many women.
