In most medical colleges and hospitals, large departments like Medicine, Surgery, and Gynaecology are divided into multiple units. Typically, there are 6 units, each assigned to a specific day of the week for example, Unit 1 handles Monday admissions, Unit 2 Tuesday, and so on until Saturday. Each unit is responsible for all patients admitted on its designated day, whether through OPD or Emergency. This means that the doctors in a particular unit primarily manage only those patients admitted under their unit. They are the ones who are fully aware of the patient’s history, treatment plan, and ongoing care. Because of this system, doctors from other units may not have complete or accurate information about patients admitted under a different unit. So, when patients or relatives approach a doctor from another unit with non-emergency queries, they are usually directed back to their respective unit doctors. For example, THIS patient here was admitted on Friday, and today is Saturday. So any routine queries regarding treatment or medications (non-emergency) will be handled by Unit 5 (Friday unit). Since today is Saturday, the on-call doctor belongs to Unit 6 but they step in mainly for emergencies when called by the nurses. The on-call doctor stays that entire day. Because this was not an emergency, I asked her to follow up with her Unit 5 doctors. It might look illegal in the moment, but this system actually ensures that care is given by the doctors who are fully aware of the patient’s case, while also keeping responsibilities organized and evenly distributed. . . #mbbs #doctor #governmentmedicalcollege #governmenthospital #medical
