Thalassemia Awareness 🩸 Thalassemia is a group of inherited blood disorders where the body cannot produce normal hemoglobin, leading to chronic anemia🩸 There are mainly two types: 🔘Alpha thalassemia 🔘Beta thalassemia (most common in India) . Beta thalassemia is highly prevalent in India. It has autosomal recessive inheritance: both parents must be carriers for a child to be affected. In our hospital many patients require regular blood transfusions every 3–4 weeks to maintain hemoglobin levels. Their lives are structured around these transfusions, often dedicating an entire day each month for the process. Risks of repeated transfusions: If blood is not properly screened or transfusions are not done in safe settings, patients are at risk of transfusion-transmitted infections, including: • Hepatitis B • Hepatitis C • HIV Common signs & symptoms: • Severe anemia (fatigue, pallor) • Growth retardation • Bone deformities (due to marrow expansion) • Hepatosplenomegaly • Jaundice. 👉 The most effective strategy is prevention. A simple carrier screening test (Hb electrophoresis/HPLC) before marriage or pregnancy can identify at-risk couples and prevent affected births. Prevention is the real cure.
