Delhi just introduced a rule that could change how millions of workers spend their afternoons during summer. Under Delhi’s Heat Wave Action Plan 2026, construction workers, outdoor labourers, and daily wage earners working under direct sunlight must now get a mandatory 3-hour break from 1 PM to 4 PM during peak heatwave conditions. ☀️ Why? Because heatwaves are no longer just uncomfortable. They are becoming deadly. Every year, thousands of workers spend hours under extreme temperatures with little protection. The risk of heatstroke, dehydration, exhaustion, and even death increases sharply during the hottest hours of the day. But the break is only one part of the plan. The Delhi government has also announced: • 3,000 water kiosks across the city • ORS distribution at bus stops • Cooling zones in hospitals • Volunteers distributing cotton mufflers • Additional heatwave support measures And this is not just an advisory. The Labour Department will monitor compliance, and authorities have stated that violations will be taken seriously with disciplinary and legal action against employers who fail to follow the rules. As Indian cities continue to experience record-breaking temperatures, heat is slowly becoming more than a weather problem. It is becoming a labour, health, and economic issue too. 🌡️
