I rarely watch podcasts with full attention. Multitasking usually wins. This one won over multitasking. The Women in Comedy Roundtable on @weareyuvaa kept me hooked and how! Establishing yourself as a female stand-up comic in an industry that has been historically male-dominated isn’t just about being funny. It’s about surviving rooms not built for you. It’s about being palatable without being diluted. It’s about being told, directly or otherwise, what kind of woman works. Which is why seeing @gurleen_pannu @mallikadua @prashastisingh @nambyaar @srishtipatch @kareemabarry @thatindianchick_ together being their unapologetic, unfiltered, and joyfully sharp selves felt important. Not all “women podcasts” are this raw, honest, fearless. There were no cop-out answers. No likeability-filtered feminist soundbites. And yet, it was so funny while tackling some of the most serious conversations women constantly carry. They spoke all heart on a wide range of topics. About conditioning, how “not like other girls” was once handed to us as a compliment, and how unlearning becomes inevitable as we grow. About celebrating womanhood in all its forms. About period conversations openly, without awkwardness or apology. About undoing the label of the 'difficult woman' About facing mansplaining and gendered online trolling and more. One of my absolute favourite moments was Vagmita calling out a person in the audience who laughed at the mention of gender studies. That and her articulation of “negotiating with patriarchy” is a point I have rarely seen celebs bring up in feminism conversations. What stood out was how nothing felt preachy, yet it wasn't surface level discussion. The jokes were spontaneous, the laughter unforced. It genuinely felt like women gathered for a late-night pyjama party and I found myself guffawing and nodding in agreement throughout. A special mention to @pareeehoonmain for the brilliant hosting, and thoughtful, precise questions. Folks! Watch it because it shows what happens when women aren’t performing feminism, but living it. Watch it because conversations like these, especially in pop culture spaces, matter. Pic source: @weareyuvaa
