Most people don’t realize this: Constantly undereating isn’t “being disciplined.” It’s stressing your body.. mentally and physically. I used to be that girl. Skipping meals. Eating as little as possible. Thinking food was the enemy. Thinking hunger meant I was “doing it right.” But I was slowly harming myself. Here’s what chronic undereating can actually do: 1️⃣Your body temperature drops. When you don’t eat enough, your metabolism slows down to conserve energy. You may start feeling cold all the time — even in warm weather. 2️⃣Your thyroid hormones decrease. Low energy intake can reduce T3 (your active thyroid hormone), which affects metabolism, mood, and energy levels, leaving you constantly exhausted. 3️⃣Your period can disappear even if you’re not underweight. When your body senses there isn’t enough fuel, it prioritizes survival over reproduction. 4️⃣Your digestion slows down. Undereating can lead to bloating, constipation, and discomfort, not a “flat stomach.” 5️⃣Your mood changes. Chronic underfueling can increase anxiety, irritability, brain fog, and low motivation. Your brain needs proper fuel to function. 6️⃣You lose muscle not just fat. If calories and protein are too low, your body breaks down muscle for energy. That’s why you may feel weak despite working out. 7️⃣Your immune system weakens. Recovery takes longer. You get sick more easily. Injuries linger. 8️⃣Your stress tolerance drops. Your body perceives under-eating as a threat, increasing cortisol and keeping you in a constant state of stress. 9️⃣And over time, you may even lose your natural hunger and fullness cues making intuitive eating harder. Your body is not meant to survive on the bare minimum. Fueling yourself properly is not weakness. It’s respect.
